Batam City is a city with heterogeneous elements of society. This is evidenced by the different ethnic groups, customs, and religions adopted by the society of Batam City. This diversity is possible due to the people in Batam City being composed of immigrants from all over Indonesia. In 2019, the population in Batam City reached 1,376,009 people and is expected to increase along with the extremely rapid development and expansion of industry.

Even so, Malay culture which is strongly associated with Islam is still very strong in Batam City which has become the root of local culture. In everyday life, there are ceremonies that contain religious and mythical elements expressed through dance, music, and various forms of art.

There are several popular traditional dances, such as the Jogi Dance and the Zapin Dance that reflect the strong influence of Arab culture. There is also the Offering Dance which is usually performed when welcoming guests of honor. In addition, there is the Mak Yong Drama, which is a dance and a song performance telling about a country called “Riuh”, which is believed to be the origin of the name the Riau Province.

One of the religious symbols of the Batam community is marked in the form of a mosque with the name of the Masjid Raya Kota Batam.

Thereby the society consisting of various ethnic groups and diverse customs, Islam is the religion embraced by the majority of society in Batam City. Besides Islam, Christianity and Catholicism are also embraced by the society of Batam City, especially by people who are from the Batak and Flores tribes. Furthermore, Buddhism is the religion embraced by the majority of the Chinese community in Batam City. Hinduism is also a religion adhered to by the people in Batam City, especially by immigrants from Bali, as well as other regions in Indonesia.
