Batam City is a city with the element of heterogeneous community. This is proved by the diversity of ethnics, customs, and adopted religions of people in Batam City. This diversity is possible due to the community in Batam City is in majority migrants from all corner of Indonesia. In 2019, the population in Batam City reached 1,376,009 people and could continue to increase along with the extremely rapid growth and expansion of industries.

Even so, Malay Culture, which is identical with Islam, is still so strong in Batam City, which then became the root of local culture. In daily life, there are ceremonies that contain religious and mythical elements expressed through dance, music, and various forms of art.

Several popular traditional dances, such as Jogi Dance and Zapin Dance, reflect strong influence of Arabic culture. There is also Persembahan (Offering) Dance, which is usually performed to welcome guests of honor. In addition, there is Mak Yong Drama, which is a drama performance accompanied with dances and songs, narrating a nation called “Riuh”, which is believed to be the origin of the name of Riau Province.

The religious community of Batam City is represented through one of the symbols, a mosque named Grand Batam City Mosque.

With a community which consists of different ethnic groups and various customs, Islam became the religion adopted by the majority in Batam City. One of those which symbolizes the religiosity of Batam City community is a mosque named Batam City Grand Mosque, located nearby Batam City Square, Batam City Government Office, and Batam City DPRD (Regional House of Representative) office.

Besides Islam, found also other religions, Christian and Catholic, adopted by the people of Batam City, especially by those who come from the Batak and Flores ethnic groups. Buddhism is the religion adopted by the majority of Chinese people in Batam City. Hinduism is also become a religion adopted by people in Batam City, especially by the migrants from Bali and other areas in Indonesia.
